Why septic care matters…

A healthy system protects your home, your property, and the environment.

Staying proactive with routine maintenance helps extend the life of your system, improve overall performance, and reduce the risk of costly repairs. Regular system inspections and service can also catch small issues early, before they turn into major problems.

Having your tank pumped on a routine schedule is the number one key to maintaining your septic system. Your septic tank separates wastewater into three different layers: Scum, effluent and sludge. Scum is created from lighter solids (grease, oil and fats) forming a layer at the top of your septic tank; effluent is the free-flowing liquid that runs through your septic tank and out to the disposal field; sludge is the heavier solids that settle at the bottom of your tank. When these layers build up and accumulate in your tank they can create many problems: clogs in the components of your tank, reduced performance or even build-up in your disposal field leading to a failed system.

Regular maintenance visits are recommended to ensure your system is working properly. When JT’s Septic comes out to your house for a maintenance visit, we are doing more than just checking the levels in your tank. A few things we are looking for are:

  •      Riser conditions for proper access to your tank.

  •      Baffle/tee conditions along with the inlet and outlet sewer pipes to ensure wastewater can properly enter and exit your tank.

  •    Evidence of damage like leaks or cracks.

  •      If your system has a filter.

This helps us to catch small problems before they become major problems, ultimately saving you time and money in the long run.

How it affects the environment

Wastewater from your house runs into your septic tank. In the septic tank the wastewater separates into three layers: scum which is light solids that forms a layer at the top of your tank, effluent which flows through the middle and sludge which is the heavier solids that form a layer at the bottom of your tank.

Natural bacteria occurs in the tank and helps break down these solid layers. The broken down material flows with the effluent into your disposal field where it percolates into the soil and eventually turns into groundwater.

A properly maintained septic system helps prevent untreated wastewater from reaching ground water, rivers and nearby ecosystems. The natural bacteria in the tank helps fight off harmful bacteria, nutrients and pollutants before they contaminate the environment.

Staying on top of septic care helps protect local water quality, wildlife habitats, and public health while extending the life of your system. Maintenance is a simple investment that benefits your property.
